‘Hidden Harms’ – Our New Gabapentinoid Campaign

County Durham Drug and Alcohol Services are pleased to launch our new visual campaign raising awareness of the ‘Hidden Harms’ of not using pregabalin or gabapentin correctly.

Both medications come with side effects that are not often known amongst those who use them, particularly when not used correctly, including overdose, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts.

Overdose is a risk when taking either substance, especially when mixed with alcohol or other opioids.

“I had a night out when I was taking pregabalin. I was drowsy, dizzy and felt like I couldn’t breathe. I didn’t know you shouldn’t have alcohol with them.”

The campaign is aimed at those who take pregabalin and gabapentin on prescription and without prescription. The campaign’s goal is to inform users of the hidden harms of using both drugs incorrectly, and the associated risks.

The campaign will be featured both on our service and external social media, and in print format out in the community. You can view our dedicated campaign page at www.hiddenharms.co.uk.

If you or someone you know takes either gabapentin or pregabalin and has concerns, contact the County Durham Drug and Alcohol Service at 03000 266 666 or on email at cddars.adult@waythrough.org.uk.
