Understanding Neurodivergence and Substance Misuse

Neurodiversity is becoming an increasingly important topic, and with greater awareness comes greater visibility. This session explores how neurodivergent people may be impacted by or at risk of substance use, helping professionals develop a better understanding of the factors affecting those who access their service. 

Who could benefit from the training? 

Do you work with individuals in County Durham who are neurodiverse or develop your own neuroinclusive practices?  

This free training will enable you to support those people you are working with by equipping you with a good understanding of neurodiversity and how it insects and links with substance misuse. 

Aim of the training: 

To develop professional understanding of how neurodivergence intersects with substance use, and to improve identification, support, and referral pathways for neurodivergent individuals’ at risk of/or experiencing substance misuse 

Learning Objectives: 

  • Define neurodiversity and recognise how it presents in various frontline settings 
  • Identify key risk factors and protective factors related to substance misuse among neurodivergent people 
  • Understand and challenge common misconceptions and systemic barriers 
  • Recognise signs and indicators of unmet need, and respond using evidence-based approaches 
  • Explore referral options or multi-agency pathways for ongoing support
